BOXING.

LONDON, ENGLAND.

An All British fight saw two-time Olympian Savannah Marshall (ENG) face Hannah Rankin (SCO) for the vacant World Boxing Organisation World Female Middle Title.

Marshall used her long reach from the beginning, with Rankin landing a good jab as the highlight of the first round. The second followed the same rhythm but the dancing took the center of the ring, as both boxers exchanged power shots.

In the third one, Rankin used her waist to avoid Marshall’s domination with the jab and uppercuts, and was able to make this fight a brawl for moments, both landing power shots. By the end of the third, both faces were red.

Marshall responded by starting more actively in the fourth, still using her reach but replacing her jabs with combinations of hooks, straights and uppercuts. She was more active but this did not impede Rankin from connecting a couple of power shots when at a close distance. Rankin seemed more hurt by the end of the fourth. And then more in the fifth and sixth.

Savannah established a clear domination and was more careful to not allow Ranking to get close. The Scottish boxer started retreating. Her elegant boxing was a masterclass by round eight and halfway through, she landed two series of more than six shots, with only one shot by Rankin as a response. The third of these combinations made Ranking put a knee in the floor. It looked as if she could have been saved by the bell but even though she stood up, referee Phil Edwards chose to stop the fight.

The Champion’s quality and boxing style, with a low guard and a dominant use of ring generalship is rarely seen in current female boxing. She only has nine fights under her belt but her style makes it very likely that she could give a good fight to the number one-rated boxer in the weightclass, Christiana Hammer (GER).

The Sportspedia had the fight 69-61 for Marshall at the time of the stoppage.
