We try to predict every single podium for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

And they are out! Just as with the (2021) Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games, we have published our preview for each event at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games (XXIV Olympic Winter Games), which you can view here.

In our preview, Norway should sweep with the medal tally of this edition. We expect a total of 20 gold medals from them, which is more than the 14 that were enough for them to win Pyeongchang 2018.

That time, Germany also had 14 gold medals -but less silvers- to finish second. We expect them to be second again, now with 11 gold medals.

The North American delegations will be key for this tally. Last time out Canada won 11 gold medals and USA won 9 for 3rd and 4th, respectively. This time we expect them to take home “only” 6 and 4 gold medals, respectively, only enough for 6th and 10th in the tally.

However, we expect a total of 26 and 22 medals from them, which is a bit less than the 29 and 23 they had last time out. If they can convert some of the medals we expect from them into gold, they could move further up. Otherwise, we expect their worst participation since Nagano 1998 and Calgary 1988, respectively.

Covid-19 could have an impact on the table. Marita Kramer (AUT) has just tested positive and we will probably not be able to fly to compete, otherwise we would have expected a gold medal from her in Ski Jump. Another favorite that will probably not be able to earn her widely expected gold is Sofia Goggia (ITA) in Women’s Downhill, due to her recent fracture.

Norway already has had several cases. Unfortunately, Simen Hegstad Krüger will be unable to defend his 30-kilometer Skiathlon title. Otherwise he would have been our gold medal favorite.

We expect the hosts to have their best Winter Olympic participation, with a total of 5 gold medals and 17 medals overall. This is far more from the single gold medal and 9 medals in total from Pyeongchang 2018, and better than Vancouver 2010, when they had five gold medals and 11 in total. Don’t be surprised if they win more than five events.

We expect Sweden and the Netherlands to be third and fourth respectively with a total of 8 gold medals, which is very similar (7 and 8) to what they had four years ago, that placed them 6th and 5th, respectively.

Also notable is New Zealand. The kiwis have never won a Winter Olympic gold. We expect them to take their first three in Beijing 2022. Belgium could earn their first Winter Olympic gold medal since 1948, although it’s in one of the most open competition for these Games.

The Russian Olympic Committee could retake its path, with 7 gold medals up from the 2 that the Russian Olympic Athletes had four years ago.

Without further ado, enjoy our prospective medal table!
